MY STORY

Since the start of my undergraduate studies in 2015, I have been actively involved in the Laboratory of Leaf-Cutter Ants (LAFC). Initially, my responsibilities centered around the care and maintenance of numerous colonies of Atta sexdens and Atta laevigata, alongside other non-leaf-cutter ant species commonly found in urban environments, such as Tapinoma melanogaster, Monomorium pharaonis, Monomorium floricula, and Solenopsis invicta. As I had the opportunity to observe them up close, my admiration for these ants grew, igniting a strong desire to comprehend their biology and way of life. Under the guidance of Professor Odair and his team, I have had the privilege of being part of an exceptional environment that has fostered both my personal and research development, and this support continues to this day.

Ant maintenance

As the collection and maintenance of colonies were integral parts of the laboratory's daily routine, I became familiar with valuable procedures and observed crucial behaviors and factors pertinent to colony health.

Science outreach

Science outreach projects were also part of LAFC's routine, encompassing visits from numerous schools and groups eager to learn about ant societies. Additionally, we would engage in presenting fascinating ant-related facts at fairs and various events.

Research

Given that the research focus at LAFC revolves around testing and comprehending less aggressive population control methods for ants that pose economic risks, I had the opportunity to delve into the study of ant behavior and immune responses.

PERSUING THE ACADEMIC LIFE

After making the decision to pursue an academic career and desiring to obtain a Master's Degree, an opportunity arose to join the Laboratory of Entomology in collaboration with LAFC. Focusing on ants as the subject of study, my research primarily involved investigating the ecology of organisms attracted to animal carrion and the factors that mediate their presence. Throughout this project, I was able to expand my understanding of ecology and other insect groups, including coleopterans and other hymenopterans.
